The Great Awakening
Steven Lawson
The greatest movement of God’s Spirit on American soil took place in the 1730s and 1740s in what has come to be known as the Great Awakening. At the center of this extraordinary revival was the God-exalted preaching of two towering figures—Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield. Together, these two gifted men provided the biblical foundation that ignited the early colonies with the gospel, resulting in a renewed Puritan vision in America.
Edwards provided the theological structure and spiritual impetus for this history altering work to succeed. Further, he preached the most famous sermon ever delivered in America, “Sinners in the Hands of an angry God.” At the same time, Whitefield was seen and heard by more colonists than George Washington. Through his evangelistic preaching, it is estimated that one-tenth of the new population was converted to Christ. Much enduring fruit would arise from this intense season of regeneration and renewal.
The founding of this country was literally birthed in the flames of this Great Awakening. As God so mightily worked almost three hundred years ago in this land, may He do so again in this present hour of human history.
