Westminster Shorter Catechism 16
Q. Did all mankind fall in Adam's first transgression?
A. The covenant being made with Adam, not only for himself, but for his posterity; all mankind, descending from him by ordinary generation, sinned in him, and fell with him, in his first transgression.
Can there be a "Second Adam" if there was never a First? Some Christians think so, not realizing how their beliefs actually undermine the Gospel. Richard Gaffin presents the case clearly and concisely: Denying mankind's common descent from Adam radically alters our understanding of sin, guilt, salvation, atonement, and Christ Himself. Those committed to the authority of Scripture would do well to weigh the cost before accepting the world's claims.
