Picture our Lord, face set upon Jerusalem with fixed determination as He goes toward that city where He knows quite well He’ll be crucified. Jesus’ disciples are following along, astonished and afraid. They also fear what will happen to them. But we know that because of Christ’s death and resurrection death is swallowed up in victory. We have no need to fear death. We can join Paul in asking “O death, where is your sting?”
The historic account of Christ’s resurrection is often trivialized in our culture today. The power and true meaning is removed. And many who call themselves Christians do not even believe in the literal resurrection of Christ. His resurrection is about life and death. It’s a story of death transformed into life, and it is full of paradoxes: some thought they were alive but were dead, and one who was dead is now alive. It offers hope to the hopeless; joy to the joyless and life to the lifeless.
